Description

Ponazuril Liquid Solution 10%

Ponazuril Liquid Solution 10% is a concentrated antiprotozoal formula widely used in veterinary practice to help manage coccidiosis caused by Cystoisospora (formerly Isospora) species in small animals and other coccidia affecting livestock. Ponazuril is the active metabolite of Toltrazuril and works by disrupting protozoal replication within intestinal cells.

This solution is commonly utilized in companion animals and livestock where intestinal protozoal infections may impact growth, hydration, and overall health.

Common Symptoms of Coccidiosis

Animals infected with coccidia may display:

  • Diarrhea (sometimes watery or bloody)

  • Dehydration

  • Lethargy or weakness

  • Poor appetite

  • Weight loss or failure to thrive (especially in young animals)

  • Abdominal discomfort

Young, stressed, recently weaned, or densely housed animals are at greater risk.

Dosage & Administration (10% Solution = 100 mg/mL)

⚠ Always confirm dosing with a veterinarian before administration.

General Veterinary Reference Dosage

Ponazuril is commonly administered at 10–20 mg per kg of body weight once daily for several consecutive days, depending on species and severity.

Since this is a 10% solution (100 mg/mL):

  • 10 mg/kg = 0.045 mL per lb

  • 20 mg/kg = 0.09 mL per lb

Species-Specific mL Per Pound Guidelines

Cats & Kittens

  • 0.045–0.09 mL per lb
  • Once daily for 3–7 days depending on severity

Dogs

  • 0.045–0.09 mL per lb

  • Once daily for 3–7 days

Horses

  • Ponazuril is FDA-approved in horses under the brand Marquis for treatment of EPM (Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis).
  • Typical EPM dosing: 5 mg/kg daily

  • Equivalent to 0.023 mL per lb (10% solution equivalent calculation)

  • Goats & Sheep
  • Commonly used at 10–20 mg/kg
  • 0.045–0.09 mL per lb
  • Duration varies (often 3–5 days)
  • Rabbits
  • Often dosed toward the higher end:
  • 0.09 mL per lb
  • Typically 3–5 consecutive days

How to Administer

  • Shake well before use.
  • Measure dose carefully using an oral syringe.
  • Administer directly by mouth.
  • May be given with a small amount of feed if necessary.
  • Ensure full dose is consumed.

How Long Until Results?

Improvement in stool consistency and energy levels is often noticed within a few days. However, complete the full recommended course to ensure effective protozoal control.

Frequently Asked Questions

1️⃣ How do I know if my pet has coccidiosis?Common signs include diarrhea, dehydration, weight loss, and lethargy — especially in young animals. A fecal exam by a veterinarian confirms diagnosis.
2️⃣ Is Ponazuril safe for young animals?
Ponazuril is commonly used in puppies, kittens, and young livestock under veterinary supervision.
3️⃣ Can it be used with other medications?
Consult your veterinarian before combining with other treatments.
4️⃣ How is Ponazuril different from Sulfadimethoxine?
Ponazuril directly targets protozoal replication, while sulfa drugs inhibit folic acid synthesis in protozoa. Many veterinarians prefer ponazuril for shorter treatment courses.
5️⃣ Is this the same drug used in horses?
Yes. Ponazuril is the same active ingredient found in Marquis, formulated for equine EPM treatment.
